Construction and Materials
Atlantic Plywood Corporation offers a diverse range of plywood and engineered wood products designed for various construction and industrial applications. Their extensive inventory includes a wide selection of veneers, plywood/sheathing, MDF, particleboard, and specialty plywood.
Plywood and Sheathing
Atlantic Plywood Corporation provides a comprehensive selection of plywood and sheathing materials. These products are typically constructed from layers (plies) of wood veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another. This cross-graining construction significantly enhances strength, stability, and resistance to warping and shrinking compared to solid lumber of the same thickness. Common applications include:
- Structural framing
- Subflooring
- Roof decking
- Wall sheathing
- Concrete forms
The specific wood species used for the veneers can vary, impacting the properties and intended use of the plywood. Common species might include softwood species like Douglas Fir, Southern Pine, or Spruce for structural applications, and hardwood species like Oak, Maple, or Birch for decorative or furniture applications.
Veneers
Complementing their plywood offerings, Atlantic Plywood Corporation also supplies a variety of veneers. Veneers are thin sheets of wood, typically produced by peeling or slicing logs. They are used to:
- Face the core of plywood to provide a decorative and finished surface
- Create custom decorative panels
- Be applied to furniture and cabinetry
The type and cut of veneer can greatly influence the appearance and aesthetic qualities of the final product. Atlantic Plywood Corporation likely sources a range of domestic and exotic wood species for their veneer selection.
MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)
Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood into wood fibers, generally in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF is known for its:
- Uniform density and smooth surface
- Excellent machinability, allowing for intricate detailing
- Paintability and ease of finishing
MDF is commonly used in furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, shelving, and decorative molding.
Particleboard
Particleboard, also known as chipboard or low-density fiberboard (LDF), is an engineered wood product manufactured from wood chips, sawdust, and other wood particles. These particles are bonded together with a synthetic resin or binder under heat and pressure. Key characteristics of particleboard include:
- Cost-effectiveness
- Uniformity and stability
- Suitability for applications where load-bearing capacity is not critical
It is frequently used for subflooring, shelving, furniture cores, and laminate substrates.
Specialty Plywood
Beyond standard offerings, Atlantic Plywood Corporation may also provide specialty plywood products tailored for specific performance requirements or aesthetic needs. These could include:
- Marine-grade plywood for high-moisture environments
- Fire-retardant plywood for increased safety
- Bending plywood for curved applications
- High-grade hardwood plywood for premium furniture and architectural millwork
The construction of these specialty plywoods often involves specific adhesive systems, wood species, and manufacturing processes to achieve their unique properties.
